Gniezno Cathedral is the most important monument in the city and one of the most valuable churches in Poland, recognised as a Historic Monument. The Gothic Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St Adalbert was the coronation site of Poland’s first kings – Bolesław the Brave, Mieszko II and others – which makes it a symbol of the beginnings of Polish statehood.
Inside rest the relics of St Adalbert in a richly decorated silver reliquary-tomb with a figure of the saint. The Gothic interior holds numerous chapels, tombs and works of sacred art. In season it is worth climbing the tower for a panorama of Gniezno and the surrounding lakes.
